The Sustainability of Cultural Heritage Through Education: From Leonardo da Vinci’s Metalpoint Technique to Cultural Heritage-Focused School Leadership
Kültürel Mirasın Eğitim Yoluyla Sürdürülebilirliği: Leonardo da Vinci'nin Metalpoint Tekniğinden Kültürel Miras Odaklı Okul Liderliğine
This study aims to examine the sustainability of historical art techniques in educational settings from the perspective of educational administration and to conceptually evaluate the roles that school administrations can assume in preserving cultural heritage and transmitting it through education. Designed as a conceptual and literature-based review, the study adopts an interdisciplinary approach by integrating literature from art history, art and cultural heritage education, and educational administration. Leonardo da Vinci’s use of the metalpoint/silverpoint technique is considered not as the primary focus of the study, but as a historical example that illustrates how historical production knowledge can be preserved, transmitted to new generations, and reinterpreted within contemporary educational contexts. Based on the conceptual synthesis of the literature, the study proposes a Heritage-Oriented School Leadership framework that links the sustainability of cultural heritage through education with school administration. The framework comprises three dimensions: preservation, transmission, and reinterpretation. It is suggested that resource management, instructional leadership, curriculum management, school culture, and cultural leadership can support the integration of these dimensions into educational settings, while strengthening teachers’ implementation capacity may facilitate the reintroduction of historical art techniques into teaching processes and promote students’ hands-on engagement with cultural heritage. The study also discusses possibilities for adapting the silverpoint technique to contemporary school settings while preserving its historical characteristics and offers recommendations for school administrators, fine arts high schools, the Ministry of National Education, universities, and cultural institutions. The proposed framework is not an empirically validated leadership model but a conceptual explanatory framework that can be tested in future research.
