The aim of this study is to examine the effect of teachers’ occupational health literacy and their perceptions of occupational health and safety self-efficacy on job satisfaction. The study was conducted using a correlational survey model, one of the quantitative research methods. The study population consisted of teachers working in state educational institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education in the province of Diyarbakır during the 2025–2026 academic year. The study was carried out with the participation of 388 teachers. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Occupational Health Literacy Scale, the Occupational Health and Safety Self-Efficacy Scale and the Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, simple and multiple linear regression analyses, and mediation analysis using the PROCESS Macro Model 4. The research findings indicated that teachers’ levels of job satisfaction, occupational health literacy and perceived self-efficacy in occupational health and safety were high. According to the results of the correlation analysis, a moderate, positive and significant relationship was found between job satisfaction and occupational health literacy (r = .515, p < .001), whilst a positive and significant relationship was found between job satisfaction and perceived self-efficacy in occupational health and safety (r = .360, p < .001). Furthermore, a strong positive relationship was found between occupational health literacy and the perception of self-efficacy in occupational health and safety (r = .737, p < .001). Regression analyses revealed that occupational health literacy significantly and positively predicted job satisfaction. Although the perception of occupational health and safety self-efficacy predicted job satisfaction on its own, it lost its significant effect when included in the model alongside occupational health literacy. The results of the mediation analysis, however, showed that the perception of occupational health and safety self-efficacy did not play a significant mediating role in the relationship between occupational health literacy and job satisfaction. Consequently, it was determined that occupational health literacy is the strongest predictor of teachers’ job satisfaction. The findings highlight that occupational health literacy plays a significant role in developing a safety culture within educational institutions and in supporting teachers’ professional well-being.
