The Role of Language in Education: Conceptual and Social Approaches to the Concept of the “Student with an IEP”
Eğitimde Dilin Rolü: “BEP’li Öğrenci” Kavramına İlişkin Kavramsal ve Sosyal Yaklaşımlar
This study aimed to examine the meanings that special education teachers attribute to the expression “student with an IEP,” its use in everyday educational discourse, and teachers’ views on alternative conceptual preferences. The study was conducted using a basic qualitative research design. The study group consisted of 16 special education teachers who had experience with Individualized Education Program (IEP) processes and were selected through maximum variation sampling, a purposive sampling strategy. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a semi-structured interview form consisting of three main open-ended questions. To evaluate the scope and clarity of the interview form, expert opinions were obtained from 10 experts, including five academics and five special education teachers, and the level of agreement among the experts was determined to be 93%. The data were analyzed through content analysis using MAXQDA software, and codes, categories, and themes were developed inductively. To assess the consistency of the coding process, the data were independently coded by two coders, and intercoder agreement was calculated as 85%. The findings indicated that teachers attributed diverse and multidimensional meanings to the expression “student with an IEP.” While some participants associated the expression with learning difficulties, academic support needs, adaptation problems, and additional instructional needs, others emphasized students’ individual differences, unique potential, and areas requiring support. Participants’ accounts also indicated that the expression “student with an IEP” was regarded as a practical and established form of usage; however, in some contexts, it could carry labeling or exclusionary connotations by defining students primarily through their educational program. As alternatives, teachers proposed more student-centered expressions such as “student in need of support” and “student learning at their own pace.” Based on the findings, it is recommended that teachers’ awareness of language use in educational settings be enhanced, student-centered approaches in IEP processes be strengthened, and language consistent with the principles of inclusive education be promoted.
